- Ashore
- Towards or onto land from an area of water
- Example: A few pieces of wood had washed ashore.

- Blight
- Something that spoils or has a very bad effect on something, often for a long time
- Example: His arrival cast a blight on the wedding day.
- fr: ravager, ruiner
- Canvas
- Cloth on which artists paint with oil paints
- Example: His paints is very like an Impressionist CANVAS
- fr: La toile
- Casualities
- A person injured or killed in a serious accident or war
- Example: The train was derailed but there were no casualties, police said.
- fr: Victimes
- Currently
- At the present time
- Example: The Director is currently having talks in the US
- fr: Actuellement
- Desecrate
- To damage or show no respect towards something holy or very much respected
- Example: The mosque/shrine was desecrated by vandals.
- fr: Profaner, souiller
- Encroachment
- The act of gradually taking away someone else's rights, or taking control of someone's time, work
- Example: The new censorship laws are serious encroachments on freedom of expression.
- fr: Empiétement, envahissement
- Insignia
- An object or mark that shows that a person belongs to a particular organization or group, or has a particular rank
- Example: the royal insignia

- Matchstick
- We use one of them to light a fire
- Example: My grandfather takes a matchstick to light the fireplace

- On hold
- If something is on hold, you have stopped it from happening now, but it may happen later

- Example: After the accident her career had to be put on hold.

- Outraged
- Angered at something unjust or wrong
- Example: Coleridge was outraged that Lewis was a man of rank and fortune

- Proponent
- A person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy.
- Example: Long a proponent of government health insurance, he pointed out that millions of Americans have no health insurance at all.
- fr: Partisan, adepte
- Sensitivity
- An ability to understand what other people need, and be helpful and kind to them
- Example: The police showed commendable sensitivity in their handling of the case.
